John Lane has participated with Pacific Ballroom Dance since the
age of 14, developing leadership abilities and excellence both
on and off of the dance floor. However, like many families in the
Puget Sound region, John’s family was impacted by a difficult
economic situation that threatened his participation this year. “My
dad, who is employed by Boeing, was facing what would become one
of Boeing’s longest strikes in history. Consequently, my
father, being the sole provider for our home, lost all income for
over a month.”
With his family experiencing hard times, John would not have
been able to afford to dance this year had it not been for PBD’s
scholarship program. John applied for a merit-based scholarship
and was awarded a full tuition scholarship that allowed him to
keep dancing and his family to “breathe a little easier.”
But John’s story does not stop there. “After having
been awarded this scholarship, I gained the confidence to apply
for a ballroom dance scholarship at Brigham Young University.” Before
submitting his application, John wasn’t even sure if college
was in his future. But with his newfound confidence John took
a risk and applied for this very competitive scholarship. “I
was not only awarded a scholarship but I was placed on the Backup
Touring Team for BYU—the highest level an incoming freshman
can receive.”
John is very grateful for the support he received from PBD’s
scholarship donors who not only supported him financially, but
also helped him develop more self-confidence and shape his future
in a positive direction. “I believe, without the full-tuition
scholarship I was awarded . . . I would not have been able to
dance this past year let alone get a scholarship and advanced
placement in BYU’s prestigious ballroom program. My dreams
are coming true and I owe significant appreciation to PBD’s
scholarship program.”
