Salina Ellison started dancing with Pacific Ballroom at age 15,
after seeing PBD perform as part of the *Auburn School District
Reaching Out Fair. Salina says that “dancing has always been
my passion,” and she was excited to learn about an affordable
program in her area, especially since the dance program at her
school had been cut due to lack of funding.
Salina has been thrilled to have the chance to develop her talents
and abilities. “Pacific Ballroom Dance is an amazing program
that has offered many opportunities for me that I could have never
imagined possible.” Dance couldn’t have come at a
better time for Salina, because she was experiencing a period of
loneliness and isolation after some personal difficulties. “Through
Pacific Ballroom’s program, I learned to trust and work with
different people, which enabled me to put my life back together
with confidence and self-assurance.”
Salina knows she is lucky—her mom loves dance as well, but
grew up in the Phillipines and never had access to formal training. “With
my mom growing up in the Philippines surrounded by poverty, she
was never provided the same opportunity as I have.”
Like most of PBD’s students, high prices at other studios
would have put ballroom dance out of reach for Salina. At PBD “it
is possible for many students of different backgrounds to take
part in dancing because the tuition is lower than other studios
that I have been to. For me personally this has been a major reason
that I am able to continue dancing and for that my mom and I are
grateful to all of PBD’s donors.”
To help PBD continue to provide an affordable arts program and
reach more students like Salina, please support the Dance for All
Giving Campaign.
*Auburn’s Reaching Out Fair is an event that was started
after the Columbine shootings. The goal is to prevent another terrible
tragedy by spreading awareness of positive activities available
to young people. PBD is proud to be a part of this event every
year as part of our outreach efforts.
